Glossary

Buybacks
Where a company buys back their own shares from the market, thereby reducing the number of shares in circulation, with a consequent increase in the value of each remaining share.

Dividend yield

Forward price-to-earnings (forward P/E) is a version of the ratio of price-to-earnings (P/E) that uses forecasted earnings for the P/E calculation.

Gearing
1Gearing is a measure of a company’s debt relative to its equity, showing how far its operations are funded by lenders versus shareholders.

Net asset value (NAV)
Net asset value (NAV) is the value of an entity’s assets minus the value of its liabilities.

Revenue reserves
Revenue reserves are the reserves that are derived from a company’s operational earnings and can be used to pay dividends.

Volatility
Volatility The rate and extent at which the price of a portfolio, security or index, moves up and down.
