Expectations for high yield and loans — Fixed Interest Monthly Income view

Nicholas Ware, Director of Retail Fixed Income and Co-Manager of the Henderson Fixed Interest Monthly Income Fund, explains how the fund continued to deliver a solid monthly income to investors in 2016. Overall, better business and consumer confidence in the US led to an asset allocation shift in the portfolio. Managing the fund's duration1  actively on the change in sentiment, from deflation to reflation in the US, also proved profitable.

2016 saw strong performance from US and European high yield and loans markets, with the US as the outstanding performer. Given the change in market sentiment post the election result and the subsequent shift in asset allocation in their portfolios, Nicholas shares the team’s views on some of the potential sources of returns and opportunities in the coming year.

Key points:

  • Fixed Interest Monthly Income Fund returned 6% in 2016 net of fees (I shares)

  • Improved business and consumer sentiment and the change in US interest rates pointing to a return of inflation, has driven the portfolio’s asset allocation shift

  • Active duration management, given the change in US interest rates post the election result, proved profitable

  • Country elections in Europe have the potential to hamper returns in European bond markets

Specific risks

  • Investment management techniques that have worked well in normal market conditions could prove ineffective or detrimental at other times.
  • Some or all of the annual management charge is taken from capital. This may constrain potential for capital growth.
  • This fund is designed to be used only as one component in several in a diversified investment portfolio. Investors should consider carefully the proportion of their portfolio invested into this fund.
  • The Fund could lose money if a counterparty with which it trades becomes unwilling or unable to meet its obligations to the Fund.
  • The value of a bond or money market instrument may fall if the financial health of the issuer weakens, or the market believes it may weaken. This risk is greater the lower the credit quality of the bond.
  • Derivatives use exposes the Fund to risks different from, and potentially greater than, the risks associated with investing directly in securities and may therefore result in additional loss, which could be significantly greater than the cost of the derivative.
  • Changes in currency exchange rates may cause the value of your investment and any income from it to rise or fall.
  • If the Fund or a specific share class of the Fund seeks to reduce risks (such as exchange rate movements), the measures designed to do so may be ineffective, unavailable or detrimental.
  • When interest rates rise (or fall), the prices of different securities will be affected differently. In particular, bond values generally fall when interest rates rise. This risk is generally greater the longer the maturity of a bond investment.
  • Leverage arises from entering into contracts or derivatives whose terms have the effect of magnifying an outcome, meaning profits and losses from investment can be greater.
  • Any security could become hard to value or to sell at a desired time and price, increasing the risk of investment losses.
