Foundation
At Janus Henderson, we believe investing is a two-way street.
The Janus Henderson Foundation has been the primary giving arm of our organisation. We put our passion and commitment to work to help people reach their goals through our investment products as well as our investments in the community. In both cases our goal is the same – to make life, and lives better.
Our Mission
We exist to help youth achieve their full potential through access to better educational opportunities.
Elevating Education
Developing Leaders in Learning
We are committed to ensuring that every child has access to a quality education. We proudly support programmes that foster blended learning, early childhood literacy, enhanced student/teacher relationships and financial education. By supporting initiatives that improve the educational experience and learning potential of children, we hope to make a meaningful impact on student achievement and cultivate the talent of the future.
Grassroots Giving
A Culture of Giving Back
We believe the path to a better world starts at home. As such, we've fostered a corporate culture of social awareness and volunteering among our own employees that has enabled us to extend our philanthropic reach to thousands of deserving organisations around the world. Our people are empowered to give through our Foundation’s Matching Gift Programmes and we enable employees to seek funds for their charity of choice through an exciting global, philanthropic competition called the Janus Henderson Charity Challenge. Through these grass-roots initiatives, we support community projects for deprived areas in Asia Pacific, EMEA and North America and research projects that help combat some of the leading diseases impacting populations globally.
Foundation Efforts
The Janus Henderson Foundation seeks to give back in ways that are reflective of our employee’s passions, both locally and across the world. To accomplish this, we invest in regional programmes that support the communities where we live and work, such as Junior Achievement and Mirabel Foundation.
Junior Achievement
In 2019, the Janus Henderson Foundation announced a grant of $1,585,000 to Junior Achievement (JA) for the redevelopment of the JA Titan® program. The programme enables youth to test their skills at running a company in a virtual business simulation where participants compete as managers in the midst of ever-changing economic conditions. Additionally, the in-classroom programme comes with a comprehensive curriculum that allows teachers and volunteers to help students understand essential economic, business management and financial concepts.
The Foundation’s support will result in more dynamic gamification of the program, while incorporating technology that will not only be more engaging for students, but will also allow for a more educational and impactful experience.
In addition to supporting the redevelopment of JA Titan, Janus Henderson employees will serve as Junior Achievement volunteers in several communities where Janus Henderson has offices including but not limited to Denver, London, Chicago, Milwaukee, Singapore and West Palm Beach. Junior Achievement serves more than 10.7 million students around the global in every major geographic location where Janus Henderson has offices making this a truly global Foundation initiative.
The Mirabel Foundation
The Mirabel Foundation is the only organisation in Australia specifically addressing the needs of children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental drug use. The tragedy of drug‐related deaths is compounded by the children left behind. Children without family may find themselves in foster care and sometimes separated from their siblings. The Mirabel Foundation is determined to provide the children and their caregivers with the much needed emotional and practical support. Mirabel’s programmes have made a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable children, ensuring that they are given the best possible chance of a positive, drug-free future; a future where they become valued members of the community.
Children’s Cancer Foundation
Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF) is a social service agency with a mission to improve the quality of life of children with cancer and their families and children impacted by cancer through enhancing their emotional, social and medical well-being. The Foundation helps doctors improve the survival rate of children with cancer through sponsorship of drugs, research and clinical/ diagnostic tests.
Founded in 1992, CCF provides children with cancer and their families the much needed support in their battle against the life threatening illness. Over the years, CCF has helped more than 3100 children and their families at different stages of the illness and recovery.
As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility pillars, it is important that we support our local communities through our philanthropic efforts. In the UK, our areas of focus include financial education initiatives, including KickStart Money and Junior Achievement. We partner with Innovations for Learning UK to enhance early childhood literacy through the TutorMate Programme. The Foundation also invests in making the city of London better for all by supporting the Lord Mayor’s Appeal Charity.
Dame Kelly Holmes Trust
The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust helps young people facing disadvantages with programmes that empower them to live positive lives. They reach out to care leavers, homeless people, young offenders, women at risk of sexual exploitation and those living within isolated communities. Their programmes are delivered by Trust trained world class athletes. Since 2017, the Janus Henderson Foundation has donated money to Dame Kelly Trust and continues to identify ways to support their overall mission.
Innovations for Learning
We are proud to support Innovation for Learning’s TutorMate Programme — which enables volunteers to remotely tutor youth ages 6-7 in core reading skills on a weekly basis. Through this programme, volunteers leverage virtual sessions to tutor students by reading stories, reviewing comprehension questions and playing games to reinforce the key phonetics learned that day.
Janus Henderson was the first organisation to participate in this programme in Colorado in 2012. Today, this online tutoring system has been successfully implemented in 30 major school districts across the US. And, with the catalytic financial support of the Janus Henderson Foundation, Innovations for Learning was able to launch TutorMate in the UK in 2018.
The Foundation's initial investment provided to Innovations for Learning, the UK team completed the vital preparatory work for launch; including registering as a charity, recruiting a sufficient number of participating schools and identifying corporate partners to kick-start the programme at reasonable scale. Innovations for Learning UK, has grown to 27 corporate partners and 400 volunteers who support 400 children in 21 schools in London (15) and Bradford (6).

KickStart Money
KickStart Money is a ground-breaking collaborative project that aims to take financial education to over 18,000 primary school children, catalysing a movement to build a national savings culture for the future. Significant proportions of the UK population lack the basic functional skills and knowledge to effectively manage their money. KickStart Money has been developed as a mechanism for the financial services industry to proactively and collectively transform the long term savings behaviour of a generation. With a shared aim of raising over £1 million, KickStart Money is a serious statement of intent by the savings and investment industry and supports calls for financial education to become a compulsory element of the Primary National Curriculum. KickStart Money’s prime delivery partner will be the highly respected and award winning financial education charity, MyBnk.
Janus Henderson is one of sixteen of Britain’s leading savings and investment firms, brought together by TISA, that are supporting KickStart Money.
The Lord Mayor Appeal
The Janus Henderson Foundation is excited to embark on a new endeavour with The Lord Mayor's Appeal – A Better City for All. This appeal is designed on four key pillars to build a city that is Inclusive, Healthy, Skilled and Fair for city employees and their family and friends, as well as those who live and work in neighbouring communities in London. They have partnered with three organisations, Place2Be, OnSide Youth Zone and Samaritans to help them address emotional and mental wellbeing and ensuring we are equipping the youth with the skills they need to be career ready.
This appeal is a great way to build upon the existing initiatives such as:
- The Power of Diversity
- This is Me in the City
- City Giving Day
- Green Ribbon
British Lung Foundation
As a winner of the 2020 Charity Challenge, British Lung Foundation is looking after the nation’s lungs to ensure that one day everyone breathes clean air with healthy lungs. Research is at the heart of what they do with over 30 years of experience. Their aim is always to improve care and to prevent, treat and cure lung diseases. The Foundation provides extensive resources and support via helplines, support groups, and community connections to people affected by lung conditions. By answering questions and reducing anxiety about the future, anyone battling a lung condition knows they are not alone.
Dogs on the Streets
As a winner of the 2020 Charity Challenge, Dogs on the Streets is a volunteer run, not-for-profit charity dedicated to the welfare of dogs belonging to the UK’s homeless community. With a fully equipped mobile veterinary surgery vehicle, DOTS ensure all the essential items and services are provided for free and on a regular schedule. From food provisions to new harnesses and leads to training and grooming sessions, the furry companions are supported and cared for at no cost.
Giving back to the communities most in need is an essential part of our strategy and it is important that we invest in education to help develop the future leaders of tomorrow. From grants and philanthropic programmes sponsored by the Janus Henderson Foundation to grass-roots volunteerism spearheaded by employees, Janus Henderson has – and continues to – make a significant impact in North America by investing in organisations like the Denver Public Schools Foundation, Young Americans Center for Financial Education and Junior Achievement.
Breakthrough Kent Denver
We believe in supporting innovative educational programmes in our communities through the Janus Henderson Foundation. Breakthrough Kent Denver has a unique model that focuses on academic success for students as well as the professional development of the future workforce of teachers. This is a one-of-a-kind programme because students come from various school districts and are provided academic coaching and personal growth opportunities to encourage empowerment. Breakthrough Kent Denver is a part the students' lives for six years to ensure success.
The Breakthrough programme has a 100% graduation rate and 92% of students matriculate into an institution of higher education. We are inspired by the programme because it focuses on students in need of additional support to achieve academic success. Ninety-two percent (92%) of their students are ethnically diverse, 84% qualify for free or reduced lunch and 81% will be the first in their family to attend college.
Janus Henderson's financial commitment will ensure students have the opportunities and resources needed to continue on a pathway to college. Besides supporting students, a key focus of the programme is the aspiring teachers – ensuring those teachers receive the coaching and training necessary to complete a successful first year in the classroom. Our partnership with Breakthrough is ensuring we are developing the future leaders of tomorrow by providing them the support they need today.
Denver Public Schools Foundation
The Foundation has funded innovative, ground-breaking work at Denver Public Schools Foundation (DPS) that allows us to act locally, but influence education nationally. Specifically, the Foundation awarded a $3 million, three-year grant to Denver Public Schools in 2008 and another $2.1 million, three-year grant to the district in 2012. Denver Public Schools has invested this money in the development of programmes designed to increase teacher effectiveness, improve student outcomes and create unique learning environments for students that utilise today's most innovative technologies. We have also partnered with DPS to create Growth through Connections, a programme focused on student-teacher relationships as well as the EdConnect programme which is designed to expose students to educational careers. We are proud to build on this long history of supporting critical education initiatives by investing in the futures of our most valuable resource - our youth.
Heart and Hand Center
Heart and Hand Center empowers youth to realise their potential by providing academic support for students ages 7 -20. They also assist youth with health and wellness education, social and emotional skills, family engagement and creative expression. Heart & Hand utilised the funding from Janus Henderson for their College & Career Programme which offers:
- One-on-one meetings, goal setting, and action planning
- College and career-related workshops
- Visits to workplaces and colleges and relationship building with postsecondary institutions and scholarship providers
- Job shadowing and internship opportunities
- Home visits with students and families
- Meetings with school staff such as teachers, administrators, and counsellors
This programme provides students the skills they need for post-secondary education and beyond.
Innovations for Learning
We are proud to support of Innovation for Learning’s TutorMate Program, which enables volunteers to remotely tutor at-risk first graders in core reading skills on a weekly basis. This online tutoring system has been successfully implemented in 30 major school districts across the US during the 2019-20 school year. Further, the program expanded internationally, into the UK in 2018 as a result of the strategic support of the Janus Henderson Foundation.
As Dan Weisberg, National Director of the TutorMate Program, explains, "We also have almost 6000 registered tutors representing 200 tutoring corporations, law firms, accounting firms, and various community organizations who are currently tutoring with TutorMate. Janus Henderson has been one of our most supportive and consistent corporate tutoring partners for many years.”

SLC6A1 Connect
SLC6A1 Connect raises awareness and funding to advance scientific research that will ultimately result in a cure for this rare disease. By leveraging gene therapy, this organisation believes they can find a cure for the rare disease SLC6A1 because gene therapy has been proven safe and effective for other diseases such as sickle-cell anaemia, retinal disease and haemophilia. Like SLC6A1, more than 80% of rare diseases involve a faulty gene. The research that's being done to cure SLC6A1 can be translated to thousands of other rare diseases, decreasing both cost and the timeline to a cure. As a result, the Janus Henderson Foundation has provided funding to assist with the research efforts.
Young Americans Center for Financial Education
Our Foundation has been a valued partner of Young Americans Center for Financial Education since 2001. Through our partnership, we have contributed more than $548,000 to youth financial literacy programmes. Over the last few years, the Foundation has partnered with Young Americans Center for Financial Education with a multi-year commitment of $25,000 each year. Our grant allows us to be the exclusive sponsor of the AmeriTowne Centers located in Denver and Lakewood, Colorado. This sponsorship allows us to support over 25,000 children and 5,000 parents and teachers that participate in the AmeriTowne curriculum each year. This curriculum builds:
- Financial Self-Sufficiency
- Smart Money Management Habits
- Solid Business Sense
- Entrepreneurial Spirit
Food For Thought
As a winner of the 2020 Charity Challenge, Food for Thought strives to eliminate weekend hunger for children in the Denver Metro Area by providing food PowerSacks for the weekend. They believe that no child should go hungry. Each PowerSack has 10-15 items, enough to feed a family of four two meals. Each week, hundreds of volunteers help pack and deliver PowerSacks to the schools served across Denver. Because every student is given a PowerSack, many of the barriers that traditionally interfere with distribution are removed. Food For Thought started in 2012 in two schools. Now, more than 53 schools are provided PowerSacks every weekend during the school year.
