A growing dividend can change the outcome

A £1,000 investment made in 1966 could have followed very different paths. As CTY's dividend continued to grow year after year, investors received larger payments over time, creating substantially more cumulative income than cash or the wider UK stock market. Over time, what began as a modest income stream had the potential to become a meaningful source of cash, helping to support retirement, cover everyday expenses, fund life's experiences and provide greater financial flexibility.

Markets can fluctuate from year to year. Over longer periods, rising income and the ability to reinvest dividends can help investors build wealth. For investors who think in years rather than months, compounding has historically been one of the most powerful forces in investing. A £1,000 investment in CTY made sixty years ago in 1966 would have grown to £1.3 million today on a total return (dividends reinvested) basis compared with £0.7m from the wider UK stock market.

That same investment, if taken by an income investor choosing not to reinvest their dividends, would have generated £55,900 of cumulative dividend income over the past 60 years, compared with £37,300 from the FTSE All-Share Index and £3,900 from cash held on deposit (as at 30 June 2026).
