Why Global Equities?

Global growth

Investing in global equities provides investors access to the very best investment opportunities from around the world. This offers the potential to enhance returns through attractive capital and income growth over the medium to long term. Companies exposed to global themes, such as technological innovation, rising middle classes within emerging markets, and ageing populations, have the potential to perform well.

Broad investment universe

The broad global equities investment universe allows strategies to be implemented that are unrestricted in terms of geography or sector. Others may be more focused, for example, on opportunities related to a sub set, such as emerging markets, or a specific investment style, such as equity income, growth or value investing. The depth and breadth of the universe means it is possible to dynamically seek attractively valued companies.

Diversification

A global remit maximises the investment opportunities at a company, sector and country level and diversifies sources of returns. Global equities are considered a core component of a multi-asset portfolio and an important element when diversifying risk.

Analysing corportate health

The health of many corporate balance sheets continues to improve as growth slowly returns to the global economy. There are, however, a number of risks remaining. It is therefore important to have confidence in an investment team’s experience and approach to analysing companies and their prospects to add value for shareholders.

Income opportunities

Investing in companies that pay dividends, and therefore generate income for investors, is an increasingly popular approach. Statistics show that dividends generate a significant proportion of total returns for equities over time and an ever increasing number of companies now recognise the benefits of attracting investors in this way.

Global Growth & Emerging Markets teams

The Edinburgh-based Emerging Markets and Global Growth teams work closely together. The teams see the boundary between emerging and developed market opportunities becoming increasingly blurred and believe they should not be analysed in isolation. The teams have similar investment philosophies and share valuable insights into performance drivers in both the emerging and developed world.
