Janus Henderson Foundation’s Annual Charity Challenge Provides US$196,900 in Charitable Donations

May 21, 2024

DENVER – The Janus Henderson Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Janus Henderson Investors, recently awarded the winners of its ninth annual Janus Henderson Investors Charity Challenge. The annual event broadens the scope of the Foundation’s impact by enabling employees to influence where donations go.

The Charity Challenge is a competition where Janus Henderson employees pitch nonprofit organizations to their colleagues and a panel of judges to win donations from the Foundation. The annual event has become a favorite tradition among employees because it enables them to steer a portion of the donations made by the Janus Henderson Foundation. It is one of the Foundation’s largest employee-led giving initiatives.

Donations of more than US$196,000 were awarded to charities in the US, UK, and Australia. The first-place prize of $75,000 was awarded to FoodCycle a charity committed to connecting communities and reducing loneliness, food waste, and food poverty.

Demesha Hill, President of the Janus Henderson Foundation and Head of Diversity and Community Relations at Janus Henderson Investors, said:  “The annual Charity Challenge demonstrates the unique way in which we engage our employees in our philanthropic work and connect wealth with purpose. This initiative drives employee engagement and rallies our colleagues around a common cause that betters our community. It is a great example of how we are living out our purpose of creating a brighter future together.”

Sophie Tebbets, CEO at FoodCycle said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be receiving the top award from the Janus Henderson Foundation Charity Challenge and we want to say a particular thank you to Janus Henderson e mployee and FoodCycle volunteer, Bruno Bachelez, for putting us forward for this amazing opportunity. The money will help us to bring our three-course community meals to more people across the country, supporting hundreds of people who may be experiencing food poverty or loneliness.”

Runners-up include second place Food for Thought in Denver and third place The Little Princess Trust in the UK. The organizations received $40,000 and $25,000, respectively.

Five charities made it to the final round and each received a donation of $5,000 for being a finalist. The three charities with the most votes in each of Janus Henderson Investors’ operating regions received $10,000 prizes.

Prize winners include:

The effect of the charity challenge on past winners continues to be impactful. Third-place winner and APAC regional prize winner, Project Help India, from the 2021 Charity Challenge shared the following update:

“Project Help India continues to both consolidate and expand its work in far North India. Since winning the Charity Challenge we have been able to establish new programs in a very poor and dangerous area in the far west of Punjab. We have set up six new small schools in slums and villages where previously many children had no access to education. Also in Punjab last year we held a SHINE Women’s Empowerment Conference. We are so grateful for the support received from the Janus Henderson Foundation.”

This year’s Charity Challenge judges were:

  • Eugenie Harvey, Chief Executive Officer at the Funding Network
  • Demesha Hill, Head of Diversity & Community Relations at Janus Henderson and President, Janus Henderson Foundation
  • Reggie Rivers, President, the Gala Team
  • Carey Wirtzfeld, Founding Partner and Senior Strategist, Philanthropy Connect

This year’s contest included 20 charity nominations and more than 2,100 employee votes. Each of the nominated organizations automatically received a $100 donation. Since launching the annual challenge, the Janus Henderson Foundation has donated a total of US$1,928,716 to approximately 370 charities across the globe.
