​The UK equity market produced a total return of 1.3% in July as measured by the FTSE All Share Index. The FTSE 100 Index of the largest companies outperformed with a return of 1.5% while the FTSE 250 Index of medium sized companies returned 0.4%. Among the best performing sectors were some more defensive areas, such as tobacco and fixed line telecoms, where City of London is overweight relative to the market average and also pharmaceuticals, where the Trust has some large investments but is underweight. Also among the defensive sectors, utilities continued to underperform on regulatory and political fears but the Trust maintains an overweight position given attractive valuations including dividend yield.

During the month, a new investment was made in St James’s Place, which specialises in the provision of financial products and advice. It is experiencing strong inflows of new business and has an attractive dividend growth profile. In our view, it should benefit from favourable long-term demographic and market opportunities in wealth management.
 
At the start of August, the Bank of England raised the bank rate to 0.75% but it still remains much lower than the average dividend yield from the UK equity market. The corporate results season has been satisfactory and going forward we believe profits should continue to be supported by the growth in global economic activity.
