Key takeaways:

  • When working with AI platforms like ChatGPT and Copilot, using the right prompts and viewing the prompt-response process as a conversation is key to getting the output you’re seeking.
  • Asking yourself what problem you’re trying to solve with a prompt can be an effective starting point in using AI to gain efficiency and build a stronger connection with clients.
  • Here, we provide sample prompts to use in various areas of your practice. Adding greater context or details to these prompts will improve results and applicability to your practice.

In our new Amplifying Human Intelligence program, we strive to help advisors effectively integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their practices. A significant benefit of using these tools is not only becoming more efficient but also creating opportunities for stronger connection with clients.

When working with AI platforms like ChatGPT and Copilot, using the right prompts and prompting with precision is key to getting the output you’re seeking. It’s also important to understand that the prompt-response process is an iterative process that should be viewed as a conversation.

To help you get started, I’ve provided several sample prompts below that could be used in a few different areas of your practice. Remember that these are intended as starting points; adding greater context or details to these prompts will improve the results and applicability to your practice.

Client experience and relationship building

“Summarize this client’s financial situation and identify the three most important planning priorities based on their balance sheet, cash flow, and stated goals.”

“Given this client profile, generate five thoughtful questions that could uncover unspoken concerns about their wealth, family, and legacy.”

“What blind spots typically exist for clients in this income/net worth range, and how can I surface them in conversation without creating defensiveness?”

“Based on this prospect’s background and concerns, draft a discovery meeting agenda that demonstrates relevance and expertise.”

“Rewrite this value proposition to resonate with a high-net-worth prospect who is skeptical of advisors.”

Operational efficiency and connecting the dots

“Segment my client base into meaningful personas based on planning needs, then suggest tailored communication strategies for each.”

“Identify where I am over-explaining vs. under-explaining in this message.”

“Critique this client communication for clarity, empathy, and relevance. Remove jargon and improve specificity.”

“Identify decisions I’m currently responsible for that could be delegated. Define clear ownership and success criteria.”

“Summarize key life events from this CRM data and suggest timely touchpoints.”

Business strategy

“If I only have three big projects left in me, what could they be?”

“Given this team structure and output, where are the bottlenecks in advisor effectiveness and capacity?”

“Break this annual production goal into quarterly and weekly leading indicators.”

“Identify whether these goals are outcome-based or behavior-based. Reframe into controllable actions.”

“Remove any goals or metrics that do not directly connect to client acquisition, retention, or planning quality.”

Development/Leadership

“Generate five direct, high-impact questions for a one-on-one with an advisor who is plateauing.”

“I need to give feedback to [person] about [issue]. The goal is [outcome]. Help me deliver this so they actually hear it and want to improve.”

“What lies do I tell myself to avoid facing uncomfortable truths?”

“What should I stop doing for top performers that may be limiting their growth?”

“Identify the key behavior change required for this advisor to reach the next level. Ignore minor optimizations.”

A starting point – and resources for the AI journey ahead

The number of AI platform prompts that we can come up with is nearly endless. As you think about these prompts and others you may develop, consider asking yourself, “What is the problem I need to solve?” I have found this to be a great starting point.

And as you embark on – or continue – your AI journey, be sure to revisit our Amplifying Human Intelligence hub, where will continue to provide new content, resources, explainers – and yes, more prompts to help you optimize how you use AI in your practice.
